'Game of Thrones’ spin off news: Showrunners confirm possibilities

The "Game of Thrones" cast pose in the press room at the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in 2015.

"Game of Thrones" Season 6 wrapped up last month and now only two more seasons are left in the HBO's show. And as previously announced by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Seasons 7 and 8 will be shorter in terms of episodes. Altogether there will be 13 episodes instead of the expected 20, which means the epic series will soon come to an end.

This is really sad news for fans, but one need not lose heart for a spin off might follow the series in the times to come. According to Montreal Gazette, the showrunners have indicated at such a possibility. During their UFC Unfiltered podcast, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said that one of the great things about George R.R. Martin's work is that he did not just build a story, he built a world. There are so many characters and such a detailed history behind his work that there are lots of different ways, one could go with it.

Well, the podcast is definitely a positive sign for those who wish for an extension to the universe of Westeros. Though the duo has said that they are super busy in making the show and they do not have time to think of a spin off, their comments certainly leave enough scope for conjecture. And they must have given the entire idea a thought as it makes for a great show concept.

Martin's work is, in every right, a treasure trove of stories and there are so many interesting characters in it that a spin off is easily possible. Independent states that it could start with a prequel and tell about the happenings in the King's Landing that led to Robert's rebellion or dwell on the Targaryens. The notorious Mad King and the fugitive Gendry also provide enough fodder for a related series and there is just no dearth of ideas.

And if a spin off is made, there can be no denying to the fact that fans would lap it up with great delight. "Game of Thrones" has millions in its spell.
