Survey: More Young People Read Using Digital Devices

More Chinese are reading more ebooks than paperbacks.

A report was released by iReader, a leading digital reading company in China, that revealed that more young people are into ebooks and other reading materials in digital form.

The report stated that people from 18 to 25 years old are more interested in digital media. There is also an increased amount of spending as people get older.

In a year, college students spend 72 yuan on ebooks and people who have been working for 10 years spend 145 yuan.

Most young people, about 37 percent read on the subway, 28 percent read before bedtime and 26 percent read while going out.

High-school students are interested in love stories. College students prefer books on suspense fiction, fantastic fiction, and literary prose. There are more graduates who read materials on success and employment.

Those who are employed for at least three years focus on interpersonal relationships and general history.

Wu Shangzhi, the vice-minister of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, also released similar data during the 2016 Beijing International Publishing Forum.

Wu said there was a 5.6 percent increase of digital readers in 2016. In 2015, 64 percent of Chinese readers are reading from handheld devices.

During the forum, the minister reported that China's digital publishing industry posted a revenue of 440.39 billion yuan in 2015.

Wu Shangzhi said the increasing base of Internet users have led to the strong demand for digital reading. Digital publishing has greatly increased in China and traditional publishing companies have ventured to increase their digital operations.

The digital literature format has also led to new forms of collaborative literature and audio books. The industry of digital publishing is also creating new business for Internet enterprises, telecom operators, and e-commerce enterprises.
