The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival kicked off with a bang on April 15, Friday, with one of the night's biggest surprises, Kanye West's unannounced appearance.
Since the rapper was not on the bill, the crowd went wild when Yeezy appeared on stage toward the end of rapper A$AP Rocky's evening set. However, it soon turned out to be a showdown as West's microphone turned off almost immediately because A$AP reportedly started his performance 20 minutes late and the set had seemingly gone over its allotted time.
The pair kept on singing unknowingly for a couple of minutes with only A$AP and backup music being audible. A$AP got super frustrated, but the two singers later hugged it out as they seemed to know that such a mishap does happen sometimes
However, the goofup did not prevent West from remaining at the festival, and he once again returned to the stage for Diplo and Skrillex's joint venture, "Jack U." But this time, reality TV star Kim Kardashian's husband came out sans microphone, just waved to the crowd and smiled while the DJ duo played his song "Power."
Earlier in the night, singer Ellie Goulding hit the main stage for an electric set that got the crowd to its feet. Her performance was attended by some fellow celebrities like Amber Rose and actor Aaron Paul.
"It feels cool to be playing, and then I've got a bunch of friends in the audience tonight," the singer told CNN before taking the stage.
Meanwhile, Goulding's close friend Taylor Swift is also expected arrive at the festival soon. However, she is not scheduled to perform and is likely to appear on April 24, Sunday, to cheer her DJ boyfriend Calvin Harris.
Harris dropped a big surprise when he introduced Rihanna to the California masses during his Sunday night headline stint. Wearing a tassel red, white and blue jacket, Rihanna gave a rocking performance on "We Found Love," her 2011 collab with Harris, Billboard reported. The number was trending on Twitter throughout the set.
Some of the other artists set to perform this year at Coachella festival are headliner LCD Soundsystem, M83 and British breakouts Years & Years. Coachella runs through April 24.
