Hundreds of individuals queued at Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, South Korea, hoping to be among 2,000 extras and 180 actors who will be hired for the upcoming historical period film "Battleship Island." With its looming shooting schedule, latest reports claimed that an undisclosed number of Chuncheon citizens is set to appear in the film.
The good news came to light when a pseudonym user KK.SoJiSuB.51K took to K-Drama Amino and posted a news translation on June 7, Tuesday. Apart from that, further interesting details about the project has been kept under wraps.
"Base Camp in Chuncheon taken acquaintance and also a sponsored of the movie for an attractive tourism place in Chuncheon," the post reads. "As the large-scale feature film, this time, Chuncheon recruits citizens to appear in the film. Recruitment is a fixed bit part 180 people and Extras 2000 people."
Nonetheless, it was earlier reported that the first script reading for the upcoming film was a success. On June 2, director Ryoo Seung-Wan was joined by lead actors - Hwang Jung Min, So Ji Sub and Song Joong Ki - at an undisclosed location and held their first script reading session together.
A series of still images of the first script reading was widely circulated on the web. Along with this, the crucial plot points and character details of the forthcoming film have additionally been uncovered. The much-awaited film is expected to contain violence, physical deeds, and frantic chases, considering that the film is based on real-life events occurred in a fringe-forsook island in Japan.
Set in the Japanese colonial era amid the World War II, "Battleship Island" depicts the concealed history of around 400 Koreans laborers, who risked their lives escaping the 6.3-hectare island, to which they were forced to board. Hwang Jung Min will take on the role of Kyungsung Hotel's bandmaster, Lee Kang Ok, who was misled into boarding the ship.
So Ji Sub was given the role of Park Moo Young, a renowned top fighter in Kyungsung, while Song Joong Ki will assume the part of a Korean Independence member, Park Moo Young. Meanwhile, Singer-actress Lee Jung Hyun is the latest to join the film's star-studded cast. Lee is poised to take on the role of Mal Yeon, a young woman forced into sexual slavery for Japanese soldiers, Kpop Buddy has learned.
With an intended released in theaters in early 2017, the cast and crew members are said to be gearing up to officially commence the filming on June 14. Earlier reports claimed that the production team is building a 6,600-square-meter film set, which will recreate the Hashima Island, on the former United States' army base in Chuncheon. The filming time frame of 6-7 months' is expected.
