CBS's "Criminal Minds" will finally arrive on the small TV screen in South Korea, as the American police procedural crime drama has recently been green lit. Most recent reports claimed that the Korean remake of "Criminal Minds" is a go with the creators of "Descendants of the Sun."
The exciting news comes straight from the horse's mouth - a representative from "Descendants of the Sun's" production firm, NEW - who spilled the beans to Soompi on June 8, Wednesday. The unnamed representative revealed that NEW and Taewon Entertainment are teaming up to produce the remake of CBS's "Criminal Minds."
"We are targeting an early 2017 premiere, and are discussing the selection of a broadcast station," the representative added. Another released joint statement between New and Taewon Entertainment, as obtained by Yonhap News Agency, reads: "We will go through a completely different process of casting and filming."
The released statement further pointed out that this is the first time that an American series is being remade for viewers outside the United States. It added that the production team will most likely ask the avid fans of their favorite episodes and ideas from the show, in an effort to create the first season of its South Korean version.
Created by Jeff Davis, "Criminal Minds" is a police procedural thriller series that follows the individuals from FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), who start catching various criminals through behavioral profiling. The original "Criminal Minds," which premiered on Sept. 22, 2015, was loved for showing the daily personal lives of the characters, delineating the solidified life and the pre-requisites of an FBI profiler.
Although both giant companies are yet to determine the exact release date for the show, it was reported that Disney Media Distribution will be responsible for distributing the series not only in South Korea but also in Japan and mainland China. Nonetheless, it should also be noted that this is not the first American series to be remade for a Korean version.
As a matter of fact, tvN's remake of "The Good Wife," starring Yoo Ji Tae and Jeon Do Yeon, is scheduled to premiere on July 8, while the Korean remake of HBO's "Entourage" will hit the airwaves sooner or later in November. It is said that tvN purchased the show's publication rights in 2015.
Stay tuned for more updates, as they arrive. While waiting, here is the trailer for the original "Criminal Minds":
