Following Dylan O'Brien's accident on the set of "The Maze Runner: The Death Cure," production for the movie has remained at a standstill. However, there are rumblings that the plot will undergo a bit of change from the original source material.
Originally, the third movie was reportedly supposed to pick up from where "The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" left off, and that was where Minho (Ki Hong Lee) and the other Gladers were taken by WICKED. However, unlike the second film, which began immediately following the events of the first, director Wes Ball has opted to do a time jump and fast forward to events that happen a year after Minho's abduction.
"This next one will be cool because we're gonna cut maybe a year later," Ball told Collider. Additionally, Ball revealed that the movie is "gonna be a different kind of an engine, a different kind of genre almost and a different sort of color palette and terrain."
In "The Maze Runner: The Death Cure," Thomas sets out to save his friends from WICKED and at the same time uncover the truth behind its operations. As this point, WICKED has no idea that Thomas remembers a lot about his life before the Maze. Thomas beat the Maze and he survived the Scorch, but the truth he eventually discovers may be what will end it all.
"The Maze Runner: The Death Cure" release date has been moved to Jan. 12, 2018 from its original Feb. 17, 2017 premiere. As for when filming might resume, it will all depend on O'Brien's recovery. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor's injuries include a "concussion, facial fracture and lacerations."
"His injuries are very serious, and he needs more time to recover," O'Brien's publicist said. So far, there's been no update about O'Brien and his current condition. He also hasn't updated his Twitter since March.
The 2014 "The Maze Runner" movie grossed $102 million across the United States. The 2015 "The Scorch Trials" secured $82 million in domestic box office sales.
Meanwhile, O'Brien is also in talks to star in a lead role in "American Assassin" together with Michael Keaton.
