BBC boss wants the new "Doctor Who" to reflect our world and they want a disabled actor to fill a major role. Given the said "major" role, this actor will star alongside Peter Capaldi as The Doctor.
Previously the "Doctor Who" showrunners only accepted black actresses during the auditions for The Doctor's buddy. According to Daily Star, because the BBC bosses also want the show to be more realistic, Casting director Andy Pryor wants find a disabled actor for a big role.
"The area where I haven't pushed hard enough is disability," Pryor said. This is what he wants to work out on the next series that is scheduled to air next year.
He then went on saying that head writer Steven Moffat is all in with the idea. Moreover, executive producer Brian Minchin is likewise amenable to such decision.
Moving on, as far as casting a black actress as the new sidekick Bill is concerned, Pryor was completely in favor of such decision. He believes that it was the right thing to do. He has also revealed that the reason behind was that he wanted to the show to be interesting to a huge variety of audience.
"Most actors in this country are white. Unless you are conscious about not always going in that direction you're going to end up with the same cast all the time. And that's not OK," he said.
Meanwhile, previously swirling rumors suggested that Peter Capaldi would no longer be The Doctor after Season 10. The rumors likely came after Steven Moffat announce that he was leaving the series in 2017.
The good news is that Capaldi is not leaving "Doctor Who," according to Screen Crush. This was confirmed by Moffat himself. He has also said that his exit from the BBC sci-fi series will have nothing to do with Capaldi's role.
After Moffat leaves, Chris Chibnall will step in as the new head writer and executive producer beginning season 11. The Doctor's new sidekick Bill role was given to Pearl Mackie.
On the other hand, as to when Capaldi will finally give up the "Doctor Who" TV series, that is still out of the question. Next season, he will be joined by a yet to be named disabled actor who will playing a major role.
