A 4K version of PlayStation 4 codenamed Neo will allegedly be unveiled on Sept.7 at an event that will serve as a platform to showcase the capabilities of updated PS4.
The upgraded version of PS4 is expected to have improved specifications that will allow it to run games at a higher resolution than the 1080p limit of the current version, the Verge reported. Apart from this upgrade, the new models will remain more or less the same as the current version of PS4 console which has been available in the market for a few years now.
Sony recently confirmed that they are in a process of launching a 4K PS4 soon and that it will be available in the market alongside the existing PS4 but at a slightly higher price. "We will be selling both versions through the life cycle," CEO for Sony Interactive Entertainment, Andrew House told The Financial Times in June. He added that even after the console's release, all games will continue to support the existing PS4, and chances are that majority of games will support the high-end PS4 too.
The announcement came soon after the launch of Microsoft's Xbox One S last week. While the One S is not meant for 4K games, a new Xbox is expected to be released sometime next year which will support 4K games. The launch will certainly start a new battle between the two giants of gaming console business.
But Sony's new console is not a PlayStation 5 -- it has been designed to complement the existing PS4. All PS4 games will run on the PS4 and on Playstation Neo. But some reports suggest that Sony is all set to take advantage of its new console's enhanced power. With the new machine, PS4 games will look and run better due to some extra optimization done by Sony's developers.
