American football's Michael Sam will be joining "Dancing with the Stars," ABC announced through "Good Morning America" Tuesday morning. Sam, who as revealed a year ago that he is gay, is not on any National Football League roster currently.
Sam, the first gay player to be drafted in the NFL, will become part of the 20th season of "Dancing with the Stars" that is set to commence next month. Together with the football star are music icon Patti LaBelle, Olympian Nastia Liukin, and television icon Suzanne Somers.
The defensive-end, free agent player had not been invited on any NFL team since he was not renewed by the Dallas Cowboys from last season's practice squad. Prior to that, Sam was drafted by the Rams for last year's Round 7, but was released after an 11 tackle, three sack pre-season performance.
Sam has previously revealed his interest to be involved in the League's first-ever veterans' reunion that is said to take place on the third week of March. Until today, it is still unclear if his involvement in "DWTS" would interfere with this plan.
NFL players have previously done well on this dancing show with Hines Ward and Emmitt Smith winning each of their seasons, while Warren Sapp, Jason Taylor, and Jerry Rice finishing second.
The Olympic champion gymnast Nastia Liukin is going to be paired with Derek Hough, the beloved pro-dancer is back surprisingly. Hough, an Emmy-winning choreographer and mirror ball champ, previously revealed to depart the show to do a Radio City Spring Spectacular.
NFL's first openly gay player is engaged to Vito Cammisano, his college sweetheart during a romantic trip in Europe, the Daily Mail reported.
"Dancing with the Stars" is scheduled to begin the 20th season's filming on March 16.
