It's a bird! It's a plane! It's "Man of Steel 2" confirmed! After months of dormancy surrounding the "Superman" movie franchise, it was recently confirmed that a sequel to 2013's "Man of Steel" is indeed in the works. The information was brought to light by no other than Henry Cavill's manager.
Dany Garcia, who reps Cavill, spilled the beans in an interview with Newsweek. "Henry has a big appetite," Garcia said. "We've been in a five-month period of time where he's re-strategizing, acquiring property [for his production company Promethean], he's filming [Justice League] now, he's in development for the Superman standalone... he's beginning to expand that world."
"It's beautifully teed up. In a year from now, or two years from now, he's going to be a force globally."
Clearly, Cavill has a lot in store for fans in the future, particularly with respect to the growing DC Extended Universe.
Word on a "Man of Steel" sequel was sparse until today, considering that Warner Bros. seems to be more focused on beefing up other DC titles, such as "Justice League" and standalone films for Wonder Woman, The Flash and Aquaman, to name a few.
However, The Wrap reported that Superman is a "top priority" for Warner Bros., and that "getting the character right for audiences if of tantamount importance."
Although not much is known about "Man of Steel 2," there are currently several theories as to which big bad might appear.
In comic book lore, Brainiac is one of Superman's greatest enemies. In a report from Cinema Blend, it is said that Brainiac would be after the codex previously seen in "Man of Steel." This codex contains the genetic information of every Kryptonian; however, the codex is not with Superman but with another Kryptonian survive. Thus, it is presumed that Superman will be up to the task of protecting the codex from Brainiac.
A tentative "Man of Steel 2" release date has not been tabled yet, but it is presumed that it will take a couple of years before it hits the big screen. For now, Warner Bros.' DC movie lineup is filled until 2018. "Wonder Woman" and "Justice League" will be out in 2017, while "Aquaman" and "The Flash" is slated for 2018.
