Chinese actor and EXO boy band member Lay is shooting “Operation Love,” the Chinese remake of the Japanese drama with the same name and renamed “Operation Proposal” in South Korea.
Movies and TV shows from China and South Korea have been known to cross borders, such as the 2016 hit drama “Descendants of the Sun” which was broadcast simultaneously in late February until mid-April by KBS 2TV in Korea and iQiyi in China. Many fans of Hallyu started their love for drama with Chinese drama.
9 Drama Genres
For its yearender, Korean entertainment website Soompi listed several Chinese dramas which lovers of Korean dramas would likely appreciate. Soompi listed nine categories of Chinese dramas, led by High School Life. If Koreans appreciated “Reply 1997,” they would also love to watch “Back in Time,” a Chinese drama set in the 1990s about five high school friends who were very close but went different ways after graduation.
A second popular genre is Gender-Bending, which brings to mind Korea’s “Coffee Prince.” Currently showing in Taiwan is “Bromance,” about Pi Ya Nuo (Megan) Lai, a girl who lived for 25 years as a male because of a fortune teller’s prediction or face death.
Friends Who Become Lovers is a third genre tackled in “9 Ends 2 Out,” a Korean drama. A similar Taiwanese drama is “In Time With You,” starring Ariel Lin as Cheng You Qing and Bolin Chen as Li Da Ren, which is about best friends who place a bet who will get married first before they turn 35.
Taiwanese Romance
Other popular genre are Love-Hate, Fantasy, Strong Female Lead, Time Travel and Accidental Shenanigans. Soompi also listed Taiwanese romance dramas that Korean drama lovers should watch. The list includes “Devil Beside You,” “Moon River,” “Fabulous Boys,” “It Started With A Kiss,” “Just You,” “Refresh Man” and “Fall In Love With Me.”
