Sony PlayStation has recently counted down the most downloaded games for 2016 and nobody would have expected what the top game was. As the results came in, Psyonix's "Rocket League" topped the list overtaking titles such as "Call of Duty" and "Grand Theft Auto 5."
Players and game critics alike were quite surprised with such results, considering the fact that "Rocket League" came out in 2015. Furthermore, the game was neither produced by any of the top game developers in today's gaming arena, Metro has learned.
For the uninitiated, the vehicular football-inspired league came out in July 2015 and was made available to major platforms, including PCs that run on MacOS and Linux. In June 2016, game publisher 505 games eventually produced physical copies of the title, though it only made copies for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Aside from the aforementioned games, "Battlefield 1" came in second followed by "Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition" and "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" respectively. Meanwhile, AAA titles such as "The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Special Edition," "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End," "The Last of Us Remastered," and even "Final Fantasy 15" only made it at the tail end of the list, according to PlayStation's blog site.
Furthermore, "Rocket League" did quite well on PlayStation's top downloads for December 2016 as it finished 10th on the list. Meanwhile, the title's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" downloadable content came in ninth under the add-on category.
The game was later on deemed as an eSport and was sponsored by the Electronic Sports League and held the first "Rocket League Championship Series" in March 2016. The finals went full throttle last August 2016 and its second season took place in December 2016.
