Speculations are rife whether author George R. R. Martin will be able to finish the much-delayed book "Winds of Winter" before "Game of Thrones" Season 7 premieres in the summer or not. Like the book, the TV show is also delayed due to some production issues.

Martin revealed in a candid post on his blog Not a Journal that, he hopes to release the book this year. He also said that he has made a lot of progress while writing the book and ultimately, it may be released in 2017.

"Not done yet, but I've made progress," Martin wrote. "But not as much as I hoped a year ago, when I thought to be done by now. I think it will be out this year."

The author was quick to add a disclaimer that he also had thought the same thing about wrapping up the book  in 2016. On the other hand, he is not releasing any new sample chapters of the book. This led to fresh speculations that the book is nearing completion, so the author wants to keep the mystery of the plot intact.

The last sample chapter Martin released on May 10, 2016 was based on Princess Arianne Martell, an integral part of the book series but she is missing in the TV adaptation "Game of Thrones." He had released one more chapter on the character earlier in 2012.

The book series and the TV shows are not in sync and the seventh season of the show will supersede the events in "Winds of Winter," according to Telegraph. Many characters of the book have been killed off in the TV adaptation whereas they are still alive in the book series "A Song of Ice and Fire."

Meanwhile, the much-anticipated book "Winds of Winter" is expected to have over 1,500 pages. It is quite an extensive book and hence, it may taking so long to complete. It is the sequel to both "A Feast for Crows" and "A Dance with Dragons," which explains the extreme length of the book.
