"How to Be Single" actress Drew Barrymore gnaws on human flesh on Netflix' new TV show "Santa Clarita Diet." She is playing a flesh-eating zombie-ish housewife in her debut series.
According to Deadline, "Hitman" actor Timothy Olyphant and Barrymore stars as an ordinary husband and wife realtors Joel and Sheila, respectively, in the dark comedy "Santa Clarita Diet." They are leading vaguely discontented lives in the Los Angeles suburb of Santa Clarita with their teenage daughter Abby ("Dramaworld" alum Liv Hewson) until Sheila goes through a dramatic change, putting their lives down a road of death and destruction.
In the "Santa Clarita Diet" trailer, everything is fine until Barrymore's character Sheila begins uncontrollably throwing up one day and seemingly dies, Entertainment Weekly reported. Once Sheila wakes up, she does not have a heartbeat but has an appetite for raw meat, specifically on human meat.
Sheila's husband Joel is left to help her satiate her hunger and discusses her potential dinner options, as seen in the "Santa Clarita Diet" trailer. However, finding her bait and killing them without any trace is going to be harder than it seems.
Barrymore and Olyphant will also executive produce "Santa Clarita Diet" with showrunner Victor Fresco, who will also serve as writer. Aaron Kaplan and Tracy Katsky are executive producers with Flower Films' Chris Miller and Ember Truesdell. Nancy Juvonen is producing with Barrymore by way of her Flower Films banner.
"Santa Clarita Diet" marks her first regular series role for Barrymore. It also marks KatCo's first series order under the company's deal with Kapital Entertainment. It is expected to film up to 13 episodes.
Besides the upcoming "Santa Clarita Diet," Olyphant just finished and earned an Emmy nomination as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens on FX's critically acclaimed drama series "Justified" for six seasons. He recently recurred on the Fox comedy "The Grinder" and starred in Kenneth Lonergan's off-Broadway play "Hold On To Me Darling." He was also seen in Gary Marshall's romantic comedy "Mother's Day" and Oliver Stone's "Snowden," opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Barrymore recently starred in "Miss You Already" and executive produced Warner Bros.' comedy "How To Be Single." She was a Golden Globe Award and SAG Award winner for her role in HBO's "Grey Gardens."
"Santa Clarita Diet" will be available on Netflix on Feb. 3.
