Conatus Creative have released a brand new trailer for "River City Ransom: Underground." The trailer not only showcases the characters and gameplay elements but also unveils the official release date.
The game is advertised as a proper sequel to "River City Ransom" which released for the NES back in 1989, Hardcore Gamer reported. It will feature returning characters Ryan and Alex but they are portrayed as older adults instead of being high school students.
Elements from the original game, such as the beat 'em up mechanics, RPG system of upgrading each fighter and an open world design all make a return in the sequel. However, the game will also include numerous updates and new features that were not present in the NES original.
Some of the new features include a wider option of playable characters. The launch trailer showcases a total of eight characters, which include Ryan and Alex. Each character will have a distinct fighting style, increasing the game's replayability.
Conatus Creative initially launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the game's development in 2013. The initial release date was scheduled for September 2014, Destructoid reported, but this was pushed back when the rights to the franchise were acquired by Arc System Works.
Fortunately, Arc System Works agreed to let Conatus Creative finish and release the game. The company also released their own "River City Ransom" game for the Nintendo 3DS, titled "River City: Tokyo Rumble."
The original goal was met but the additional stretch goals were not, meaning there are no immediate plans to release the game other than on the PC, Mac and Linux. Ports for the Switch, Xbox One, PS Vita and PS4 may still be released if the PC version finds success.
"River City Ransom: Underground" will release on Feb. 27. The official launch trailer can be viewed below:
