There are two reasons why Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, 27, who is professionally known as The Weeknd, should congratulate his girlfriend Selena Gomez, 24. She is executive producing a TV series that is about to premiere and she recently released a collaboration song that is doing well on the charts.
Gomez is the executive producer of "13 Reasons Why," a new miniseries scheduled to be released by Netflix on March 7. It is an adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name by Jay Asher.
In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Asher discussed the upcoming series. When asked how he was feeling about seeing his book be transformed into a Netflix series, the author said he was feeling very confident, happy and lucky.
The 13 reasons cited in the title refer to the reasons a dead teenage girl named Hannah had listed her suicide. Among these reasons are bullying and abuse.
According to Asher, Gomez was the first person to come to him almost eight years ago telling him that she wanted to play Hannah. At the time, they had an amazing conversation and the Gomez obviously understood the story and wanted Asher to be involved in a feature film adaptation, the author revealed.
"I remember my film agent at the time even saying, 'That's what everyone in Hollywood says,' but she was true to her word," Asher said of Gomez. Later on, they realized that the story of the book will not fit in a feature film.
The role of Hannah was eventually given to Katherine Langford. Among her co-stars are Christian Navarro, Michael Sadler, Justine Prentice, Devin Druid, Jillian Nordby, Miles Heizer, Kyra Cromwell, Nina Cheek, Sullivan Rutherford, Tiffany Wong and Michele Selene Ang.
While busy as the executive producer of "13 Reasons Why," Gomez still has time for her singing career. On Feb. 16, her collaboration song with DJ Kygo titled "It Ain't Me" was released and went on to become one of the top songs on the charts currently.
It appears that everything is going well for Gomez both in terms of love and career. She and The Weeknd are "doing great together," a source close to the "13 Reasons Why" executive producer told People that
