“Big Hero 6,” Oscar 2015’s best animated feature, continued to take over China’s box office last week, while sci-fi movie “Jupiter Ascending” managed to compensate for its unsatisfactory North America performance with well-off revenue records in the country.
China is currently regarded as the word's second-biggest market for the film production industry.
Sixteen days after Disney's "Big Hero 6" landed on Chinese theaters, research firm Entgroup revealed that the film has already garnered $66.27 million, 30 percent of which is earned last week. The animation featuring Marvel's superhero team of the same name had a total of 140,672 screenings and around 3.9 million admissions.
Coming behind the hit animation film is "Jupiter Ascending," which has recently added $16.85 million for a total of $40.3 million for its first full week. The Landy and Andy Wachowski film, which stars Mila Kunis, had 3.84 million admissions in its 187,590 screenings.
The "Man from Macau II" landed on the third spot, earning an additional $10.78 million to its $150.58 million revenue mark. The film, top-billed by Hong Kong action star Chow Yun-fat, hit the Chinese theaters around a month ago. To date, the movie has 114,646 screenings with total admissions of 1.83 million
Still securing the fourth box-office spot is "Wolf Totem," a Sino-French epic helmed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. The movie, released on the same day with "Man from Macau II," pulled out a gross revenue of $107.46 million, $7.64 million of which was added last week. "Wolf Totem" is backed by China Film Group and so far had 83,857 screenings and 1.29 million admissions.
"Paddington," StudioCanal's CGI live-action movie and "Dragon Blade," Jackie Chan's historical epic, managed to hold the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
The StudioCanal film earned a total of $13.02 million after 11 days of release after recording a total of 82,866 screenings and 1.11 million admissions. The movie's premiere in Shanghai was graced by U.K.'s Prince William.
Meanwhile, "Dragon Blade" added another $3.25 million to its $116.78 million gross revenue 25d ays after its premiere. The movie, also starring John Cusack and Adrien Brody, had 547,235 admissions and 44,069 screenings.
Wang Ning's "The Right Mistake" added another $1.96 million, increasing its earnings to $5.64 million after 11 days, securing the seventh spot for the romantic comedy.
"Nowhere to Run," a domestic thriller, came behind with $1.83 million in its opening weekend.
After 10 days of release, "Beijing, New York" managed to add $930,000 to its $2.89 million gross revenue. The movie stars Rain Li.
Completing the top 10 box-office hit is "Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal," which added a $810,000-revenue to the 25-day period gross of $64.47 million. The 3D, VFX fanatasy action adventure is produced by Ann An of Desen International Media and co-directed by Zhao Tianyu and Peter Pau.
