"Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch is joining forces with other British actors, Vanessa Redgrave and Simon Callow, to stop the implementation of the new British Bill Of Rights that will replace the existent Human Rights Act (HRA) in the United Kingdom.
The actors appeared in a video produced by a human rights organization, Liberty, which put together the visual as part of their "Save Our Human Rights Act Campaign" determined to draw attention to the resultant repercussions of doing away with the current act.
Cumberbatch claimed that the Human Rights Act in Britain is not an option for politicians to choose "who deserves protection," according to the Independent adding that it is the right of every citizen.
British Prime Minister David Cameron however, claimed the act to be necessary to break free from the formal ties between the United Kingdom's Courts and Europe's Court of Human Rights.
The "Sherlock" actor further lamented the cons of doing away with the act in the video when he expressed concern that repealing it would result in less security and assurance against state abuse leaving the marginalized in society more vulnerable.
In the video, the British actors described stories of ordinary individuals who have been exploited by those in power such as a policewoman being raped, struggles by ordinary citizens to find justice for loved ones who have died in police custody.
The stars in the video claimed that the human rights act is the only legislation that can hold politicians accountable for their actions.
Campaigners together with heads of human rights organisations such as Shami Chakrabarti of Liberty, claimed the United Kingdom was pandering to populist beliefs, according to Breaking News.
