"Game Of Thrones" season 5 episode 9 titled "The Dance With Dragons" became controversial when it featured a pedophile scene with Ser Meryn Trant (Ian Beattie), which seemed to have outshined the death of Shireen Baratheon's death in the HBO series' fifth season's penultimate episode.
In a recent interview with Vulture, Beattie talked his "Game Of Thrones" 5 preparation and which among the characters would he like to be killed. For the actor, it would be perfect for Ser Meryn Trant to kill Bronn (Jerome Flynn).
"I had a funny feeling when I read in episode 4 that I was being shipped off to Braavos with Mace Tyrell, because I knew who was in Braavos," Beattie said referring to the recurring character played by guest star Roger Ashton-Griffiths.
Beattie said when they were starting season 5, he was sent the scripts for the first four episodes. While he did have "a strange feeling of impending doom," "Game Of Thrones" show runners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were "not without a touch of style."
"They phoned me personally to tell me the news, 'Valar morghulis,' or in this case, 'Meryn morghulis,'" Beattie said referring to Benioff and Wesiis. "They said, 'We're sending you the scripts of episodes 9 and 10, and you get to see a really nasty side of Ser Meryn."
After that phone conversation, Beattie though his character Ser Meryn Trant was going to get to kill someone "nice and popular." The actor said, "I thought, Maybe I get to kill Bronn. That would be perfect."
In another interview with Hollywood Reporter, "Game Of Thrones" season 5 finale episode director David Nutter said the Ser Meryn Trant's controversial scene in the penultimate episode was reminiscent of "The Hateful Eight" director Quentin Tarantino, as how Weiss, Benioff and editor Tim Porter described it.
