"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 could feature Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) battling with Alzheimer's. Meanwhile, former cast member Katherine Heigl is worried the series would not survive without Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey).
Series creator Shonda Rhimes previously said that the show will enter unchartered territories following Derek's death and Dempsey's axing. Fans cannot help but speculate that Meredith will still be haunted by her husband's death and this could cause her downfall.
According to Venture Capital Post, Meredith's battle with Alzheimer's will finally be explored in season 12. Although the topic was previously touched in episodes 9 and 10, there has not been any update about Meredith's condition.
With Derek's recent death, all eyes are on Meredith and the latter may discover painful truths about the disease that was passed on to her by her mother. There are also reports that Meredith will die this season.
Such speculations were heightened by Christian Today's article that revealed Pompeo's contract will expire after season 12. Since series creator Rhimes is known for killing off characters on a whim, Pompeo will surely not be spared when the time comes.
In other news, Heigl previously denied rumors that she will be returning to "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Izzie Stevens. Although the idea might be nice, Heigl has come to terms with the fact that starring on any of Rhimes' shows will never happen.
Still, this did not stop her from wishing "Grey's Anatomy" more success because she knows thousands of people around the world are supporting the show.
"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will premiere on ABC this September.
