Comcast is launching a 2GB internet service to nearby cities as they look to innovate the world of internet.
Marcien Genckes, senior vice president of Comcast confirmed the project on their official website and said that they wanted to push the internet innovation and provide customers with fast internet service.
"The next great Internet innovation is only an idea away, and we want to help customers push the boundaries of what the Internet can do," Genckes said. He also said that by launching the internet service, they also want to inspire developers on what is possible in a multi-gigabit service.
The cost of the 2-gigabit internet service will be $500 each on installation and activation services and $300 for monthly payment. The service will be available on the following states; Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee and California, according to PC World. The goal of the US-based mass media company is to spread their internet service across the country by the end of the year.
Comcast's 2GB service is currently the fastest connection provided by a company, almost doubling any internet connections in the United States.
The article argued the pros and cons of having the 2-gigabit service, saying that an ordinary household would not need the internet service while internet geeks would surely welcome having a fast connection service.
However, a source told Minnpost that it would not make much of a difference whether an internet connection is 1 Gbps or 2 Gbps. He said if someone is offering four thousand videos or if someone wants to download a movie, it is useful but most people stream for movies so it would not make a difference if your internet is of 2GB service.
Furthermore, he added that it would only be more useful if a user has a small business or his 10 kids are all playing online games at the same time.
Chief strategy officer for Fission Strategy in Los Angeles Jake Brewer wrote that people would be mistaken if they focus on the internet speed alone because gigabit internet could have some implications on the future. It should change how people approach the world of internet.
Comcast's release of 2GB service comes at the heels of CenturyLink and USInternet offering 1-gigabit internet residential service. Comcast also stated that in addition to gigabit pro service, they are also working on DOCSIS 3.1 which is a 1 Gbps technology solution.
