Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal was hinting on preparing the way for a Cristiano Ronaldo transfer back to Old Trafford before he retires two years from now.
The 63-year-old football manager sat down in a mini-press conference after their 3-1 conquest of La Liga champions Barcelona on Saturday and said that he would retire in 2017 after his three-year contract with United expires to "keep a promise to his wife", as per BBC Sport.
"I promised that to my wife. We have not many years together any more. That is the reason," van Gaal told reporters. "I have done everything in my career as a manager."
When prodded if there is any chance that he would try to extend his career, the Dutchman insisted that he will not answer the question as it would make his wife "very mad."
Meanwhile, van Gaal also intimated on the possibility of bringing back Ronaldo to Manchester before he calls it quits, saying that the 30-year-old Portugal international is the kind of player that the Red Devils "need to compete with their rivals."
He mentioned world rival clubs such as Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Barcelona as having striker duos that could provide consistent scoring every game, and that United should also have that kind of high-octane scorers as their fans would love them to be at par with the aforementioned teams.
However, van Gaal admitted that while he is keen on having a "Galactico" signing, buying Ronaldo would be impossible as of the moment, as reported by the Mirror.
"Of course I would love it, but that's not possible," the coach said. "You have Ronaldo and then you have how much Manchester United want to spend."
