"Divergent: Allegiant" stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James shared that they were just as shocked as everyone else when they found out the ending to the Veronica Roth franchise. The actors revealed that fans, including those who have read the series, will be surprised with how the film ended.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Woodley thought that her character Tris dying to save everyone was only the right way to end the franchise. The actress said that she was impressed with how Roth concluded the series. She said that she greatly admired how selfless Tris had been.
Her co-star James shared the same sentiments, adding that such altruistic gesture is only to be expected of Woodley's character. He added that it would be strange if the ending would just show Tris and Four move on as they live on a suburban village with their kids and their dog.
"Divergent" fans have already started a petition via change.org, in an attempt to convince film producers to change the film's ending. In his petition, Steve Pattison wrote that Tris should survive in Allegiant Part 2, explaining that her parents' death would only amount to nothing if she will not make it out alive. He also pointed out that Woodley's character symbolized hope. He added that most of the cast members also felt the same way.
Pattison suggested that the plot of the movie remains the same, except that Tris survives in the end. He added that Tris and Four should get the happy ending they deserve.
