Diplo has opened up about his collaboration with 2NE1's Lee "CL" Chaerin. The duo dropped the music video for "Doctor Pepper" last week, which drew positive response from fans.
Speaking to Time, Diplo shared that fans will get to see a different side of CL. He said that the rapper is slowly deviating from 2NE1 and carving her own career. CL's new song is also reportedly going to be more hip-hop oriented compared to her recent songs with the girl group.
Although CL's new album would have a different theme, Diplo admitted that fans will still call it K-pop.
"It's going to be [labeled] K-pop because she's doing it, so it's going to be coming from another place and there's going to be Korean lyrics," he said.
The producer further described CL's music as "eclectic." He added that her new style is very much similar to what Nicki Minaj is currently doing.
In an interview with The Fader, CL and Diplo opened up about the concept behind releasing an English album. The producer revealed that he has always wanted to work with more Asian artists after working with GD and Top for Chris Brown's "Look At Me Now."
Diplo explained that the reason why CL's debut album took a while to release was because they were looking for the perfect timing. He said that they wanted to find the right balance between "cutesy K-pop" and CL's new image. He said that they wanted to introduce her as the "baddest and coolest" female today.
He added that her new album will definitely resonate to all, even those who are not a fan of K-pop or 2NE1.
