Gwendoline Christie has voiced her thoughts about the dynamic nature of her character in J.J. Abrams' forthcoming space sci-fi film "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens."
Christie is set to play Captain Phasma in Abrams' upcoming film. In her interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress said that while people know very little about Phasma at this point, people were drawn to the character because she was "a very progressive female character."
As people see Phasma's costume from head to toe, they know that it was a woman, according to Christie. The actress also mentioned that people were accustomed to connect female character through their appearance and the way they were made flesh.
For Christie, Phasma is set to be the first female villain in the "Star Wars" films and she was very proud to be part of it.
Other characters covered head to toe in the costumes in "Star Wars" film history include David Prowse's Darth Vader, Peter Mayhew's Chewbacca, Anthony Daniel's C3PO, and Jeremy Bulloch's Boba Fett, as per Comic Book. The publication said that this is set to pivot in December.
"Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" is set 30 years after the events in the "Return of Jedi." It stars an ensemble of both old and new heroes and villains played by Oscar Isaac, Hamill, Max von Sydow, Simon Pegg, Daisy Ridley, Domhnall Gleeson, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, among others.
Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" hits theaters on Dec. 18 while Gareth Edwards's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" premieres on Dec. 16, 2016. Meanwhile, Johnson's "Star Wars: Episode VIII" is slated to premiere in theaters on May 26, 2017 while Colin Trevorrow's "Star Wars: Episode IX" premieres in 2019.
