British pay-TV company Sky recently launched Sky Q, the company's newest premium TV service. Sky Q aims to attract households that want to watch different programs on several TV sets at the same time. The new premium service also aims to challenge online content providers like Netflix.
Sky Q will require a new set-top box and a broadband connection. The new service allows users to watch shows on up to five different TV sets simultaneously. It also has the capability to record up to four different channels at the same time.
Aside from providing premium TV channels, Sky Q will also allow users to access online video providers like Vevo and YouTube. Unfortunately, popular platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix will not be available.
Sky chief executive officer Jeremy Darroch describe the new service as a "new way for customers to experience TV on their terms," according to BBC. He added, "We wanted to re-imagine TV so that it's flexible and seamless across different screens and to put a huge choice of entertainment at their fingertips."
Sky will announce how much the new service will cost. On the other hand, the company confirmed that the service will be available within the first quarter of 2016.
Sky currently has 12 million subscribers in the UK and Ireland. Despite facing huge competition from online content providers like Netflix, the company continues to grow its subscriber base.
Sky Q will be launched initially in UK and Ireland. The company said that eventually launched new service in Germany and Italy, according to Reuters.
