Engineer Benson Leung recently discovered that the USB-C cables of OnePlus could damage several devices, which forced the tech company to offer refunds for both the charging cables and the adapter.
OnePlus clarified that the cables and adapters are safe to use with the OnePlus 2, but other devices not created by the company could indeed be damaged.
Leung, who works for Google, discovered that the OnePlus USB-C cables utilized a 3A identifier resistor, which could harm gadgets such as the Chromebook Pixel, Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X, according to PC Magazine.
Furthermore, the fact that OnePlus decided not to use the default USB Power resistor meant that the charger, hub or the PC USB port of the aforementioned devices would be the first to get affected.
To clarify, the Google engineer said that the resistor allowed fast-charging devices to consume more power than a source could ever allow, even if the OnePlus USB-C cables and adapters were only meant to withstand 2 amps of power.
Leung remarked that damages are possible if the gadget and the power source do not have any mechanism to regulate the amount of power flowing in and out of the device.
However, OnePlus noted that the USB-C cables included upon purchasing the OnePlus 2 flagship device will not be refunded since they are deemed safe by the company.
One-Plus co-founder Carl Pei said that the company has already started making adjustments on the USB Type-C cables and adapters.
Customers who bought the USB-C cables and adapters in India and China could have the refund by going to local repair center while consumers in North America and Europe can simply apply for the refund online until Dec. 31.
In other news, OnePlus made the OnePlusX and OnePlus2 handsets available without the usual strict invite requirement, according to 9to5google. However, the offer started on Black Friday, which took place on Nov. 27, Frida, and will end on Nov. 30, Monday.
