Samsung unveils new versions of three mid-range phones with features designed to give the company an edge over the competition.
The Galaxy A series is the affordable phones of Samsung. They feature different screen sizes, high-resolution displays and advanced cameras. The 2016 editions of the Galaxy A3, A5 and A7 will be available in China in mid-December and then expand to other markets around the world.
It takes on appearances from the Galaxy S6 in a big way, stripping away the components that made the flagship cost that much more than the slightly more budget-friendly Galaxy A line. The new lineup is Samsung's attempt to offer affordable phones with premium features as a way to battle its Chinese rivals Xiaomi and Huawei, Engadget reported.
All these three devices are using Samsung's Super AMOLED displays, which are designed to be thinner, lighter and brighter compared to LCD screens used on such handsets as Apple's iPhone. However, the Galaxy A3 offers a 4.7-inch display with 1280 x 720 screen resolution. The A5 features a 5.2-inch display with 1920 x 1080 screen resolution, while the A7 tops the other two with a 5.5-inch screen with an impressive 1920 x 1080 screen resolution.
The mid-range smartphones contain faster processors: 1.5GHz quad-core and 1.6GHz octa-core, as well as higher-capacity batteries. There is also optical image stabilization on the 13MP cameras for the two higher-end models, and little changes for the 5MP front shooters. They also come with microSD card slots to expand the 16GB internal storage.
There is no official statement yet for the prices of these new Samsung devices. However, there are estimated price tags on each device, according to CNET. A3 may cost $347, while the A5 will be $421, and A7 may have $495 price tag.
