"Mission: Impossible 5" star Tom Cruise tapped his former wife Nicole Kidman's phone, a former Church of Scientology official Mark "Marty" Rathbun revealed in a new documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah on Jan. 25, Sunday.
A former Scientologist for many years and a key aide to church head David Miscavige, Rathbun claimed he ordered Kidman's phones to be tapped at Cruise's suggestion.
Titled "Going Clear: Scientology And The Prison of Belief" based on Lawrence Wright's 2013 book of the same name, the documentary revealed that Scientology officials looked upon Cruise and Kidman's relationship with disfavor since it started while filming "Days of Thunder."
Helmed by Oscar winner and "Taxi To The Dark Side" director Alex Gibney, the documentary also claimed that Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard neither trusted nor liked psychiatrists and psychologists.
Kidman's late father Dr. Anthony Kidman, who passed away in 2014, was a prominent psychologist in Australia. Apparently, Hubbard's hostility toward the field, which remains in the Scientology church until today, affected Kidman's marriage with Cruise.
According to Scientology experts interviewed in the "Going Clear: Scientology And The Prison of Belief" documentary, Cruise became distant from the church while married to Kidman. At the time, the church allegedly wanted to break them up so that Cruise would be active again and help publicize the church's mission.
Both Cruise and Kidman have yet to comment on the claims of the documentary.
Cruise is currently filming "Mission: Impossible 5" and was said to be appearing in the upcoming films "Top Gun 2" and "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back." He is also in talks with director Doug Liman to reunite on the Universal Pictures drama "Mena," Deadline has learned.
