Following the announcement, fans couldn't help but express their excitement over the fact that they will still see their favorite characters for at least another season.

On Design N Trend's website, one fan @Aliya Naushad Ali wrote, "I am absolutely happy they renewed TVD and TO... you can't let go of the vamps... I wish they could go on and on..."

Another fan @prettylittlelairs666 wrote, "Vampire diaries and the originals are best shows ever I love them. Let's hope Vampire diaries gets renewed for 9th season. The originals renewed for 5th season."

One fan @Lemo wrote, "I hope vampire diaries n originals never end!!! Love love love them. Best 2 shows ever!!"

Another fan @KLoco wrote, "I can't imagine anyone not being happy that TVD and The Originals were renewed. I think there is so much potential now that Nina Dobrev is gone. Don't get me wrong, I was a big Delena fan and I do see them as endgame BUT I was a little tired of the entire show being based around her."

Meanwhile, there were also some fans who were clearly unhappy with the renewal news.

@JJ wrote, "I was surprised it was renewed, though maybe it's only for half a season to wrap things up. This season was so all over the place and ratings are as low as ever. They haven't had an interesting antagonist in a while. To be honest, I'll be surprised if I'm still watching until next season."

Another fan @hallie24 wrote, "Clearly a lot of fans are over TVD. I find it sad that they will run a once great show into the ground. The show has gone from a .09 in season 1 to being lucky if they pull up .04. I am afraid how bad next season will run them."

Do you think the series should have been renewed for season 8?

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
