"Penny Dreadful" Season 3 will finally answer questions about Ethan Chandler's past and about his werewolf background. The new season also brings Vanessa Ives on a new romantic path when she falls in love with a new character on the show.
Series creator John Logan said that "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 will answer fans' curiosity about Mr. Chandler's (Josh Hartnett) past. While Season 1 and Season 2 delved into Ms. Ives (Eva Green) and Sir Malcolm's story (Timothy Dalton), Season 3 finally touches on Mr. Chandler's history.
Last time fans saw the character he was on board a ship heading off somewhere away from London and away from Ms. Ives. Apparently, Logan is headed back to his home in the Old West to reconnect with his roots. Logan told Entertainment Weekly that Mr. Chandler returns home for "a final reckoning with his demonic father," which happens in the later part of the season.
Additionally, Logan assured that "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 will finally reveal how Mr. Chandler became a werewolf. The new season will also go into details about his relationship with his father and how he was raised to become this dark character. The show creator said in his interview that the third season will reveal Mr. Chandler's struggles as he comes to terms with his past demons.
Meanwhile, Ms. Ives also goes into another spiritual and romantic journey in the new season. Logan revealed that in "Penny Dreadful" Season 3, she tries to heal both her heart and mind simultaneously to make herself better.
She meets a zoologist named Dr. Sweet (Christian Camargo), whom she eventually falls in love with. The doctor's presence in her life creates a bit of a love triangle story when Mr. Chandler returns to London. However, despite the strong attraction between Mr. Chandler and Ms. Ives, the latter eventually chooses Dr. Sweet.
As for her spiritual journey, Logan said Ms. Ives tries to reestablish her faith in God by talking to an alienist/ psychotherapist named Dr. Seward (Patti LuPone). Ms. Ives develops a supernatural bond with the doctor, since she believes her to be a reincarnation of Joan Clayton/Cut-Wife from Season 2.
"Penny Dreadful" Season 3 opens May 1 on Showtime. Ahead of the show's official airdate, the network released the premiere episode free for non-subscribers. However, according to TV Guide, the network only released the TV-14 edit version of the first episode, titled "The Day Tennyson Died."
