Barely 15 months after the marriage, "Drive Angry" star Amber Heard has filed for divorce from Johnny Depp. The actress filed the petition on May 23, Monday, citing irreconcilable differences.
According to the court documents, the 30-year-old actress has mentioned the separation date as May 22 and is also asking for spousal support. Filing his response, Depp, who is worth $400 million and owns a private island in The Bahamas, has asked the judge to reject his estranged wife's request of maintenance.
Depp and Heard met in 2012 while filming "The Rum Diary" and began dating thereafter. The two tied the knot in a private ceremony at their Los Angeles home in February 2015. Days after, they celebrated with a slightly larger ceremony on Depp's private island in the Bahamas. The estranged couple is known to have no pre-nuptial agreement, TMZ reported.
The development is likely to be harsh on the actor since the divorce was filed only two days after the death of Depp's mother, Betty Sue Palmer, on May 20. The actor was known to have a especially close relationship with his mother.
Depp famously brought her late mother to the Academy Awards, when he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for "Pirates Of The Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." He even had a tattoo of her name "Betty Sue" inside a heart on his left upper arm that he got in the late 1980s, Entertainment Tonight reported.
Depp is currently promoting his latest film, "Alice Through the Looking Glass," that is set to release on May 27, Friday. Both the actor and Heard have not yet commented on the matter.
Ironically, Depp and Heard were last seen together on-screen in their video apology for the dog smuggling incident in Australia. The case started last year when Heard brought two dogs into the country where her husband was filming the latest movie in the "Pirates of the Caribbean series" in the country.
When the case was settled, the estranged couple released a video apology expressing remorse and advising travelers to respect Australian quarantine laws. They have not been photographed together in public since mid-April.
