"League of Legends" is now officially one of the sanctioned sports in Unigames, Australia's biggest college sports event. The move followed the increasing trend of recognizing the legality of e-sports as a real game.
In a statement obtained by CNET, developer Riot said that "League of Legends" can now be counted as one of the Unigames' roaster of games. The MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena), the most-played e-sport in the world, garnered success in Australia due to the cash prizes offered by Oceanic Pro League and Riot for the top players.
"League of Legends" players will compete through inter-university, regional and national tournaments before they qualify for the Australian University Games Championship. The first Regional bracket is slated between July 5 to July 7.
"League of Legends" is the first e-sports ever recognized in a popular mainstream such as the Unigames. The inclusion of the game in the coveted Australian sport event proved how valuable the e-sports play in today's generation.
Unigames is the governing body of university sports in Australia. It is managed by Australian University Sport (AUS) that invites nearly 8,000 student-athletes belonging from tertiary institutions all across the region.
In 2016, the Australian University Games (AUG) will be happening in Perth, Western Australia from Sept. 25 until Sept. 30. It allows the university athletes to participate in a friendly and competitive national multi-sport event in various levels.
Apart from the sport event, the students are also given the chance to participate in social programs during the competition. Every year, over 30 individuals and teams are participating in the weeklong event.
Riot Games may increase the number of bans in the "League of Legends" Champion Select in the near future, Blog of Legends reported. The main agenda for this is to encourage healthy competition and cultivate diversity within the game.
There is also speculation that the developer is planning on one ban per player. The ban would mean that there would be 5 per team and 10 in total every game. Despite the huge figure, the ban would give each player a chance to select who they want to face and not during the competition.
No official date yet has been announced for the release of the "League of Legends" ban system in Champion Select.
