Rick Famuyiwa is jumping on the bandwagon of "The Flash" movie just weeks following the exit of Seth Grahame-Smith from Warner Bros. due to creative differences. He is another newbie who made a name in "Dope," the 2015 film about a young nerd who tries to survive in Los Angeles which he also scripted.
Famuyiwa directed "Brown Sugar" in 2002 and the romantic film "Our Family Wedding" in 2010 but is most known for the Sundance hit, coming-of-age movie "Dope" which won "best editing." He is also currently directing "Confirmation," an HBO original film that stars Kerry Washington and Wendell Pearce.
Famuyiwa has written and directed exceptional films "The Wood" and "Talk To Me." His work focuses on race, upbringing and acceptance while his skills are best shown in strong characterization, dramatic depths and in the way complex situations are being presented, according to Forbes.
The Nigerian-American film director's works in "The Wood" and "Dope" are most relevant in bringing Flash to the movies. He is among the very few African-American directors recruited to make films about a white comic book superhero.
Warner's first choices for "The Flash" directorial job were the "The Lego Movie" duo Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, who are still producers but Grahame-Seth was set to direct the film in October. Grahame-Smith authored the 2016 "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," as well as "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" and "Dark Shadows" in 2012.
Grahame-Smith's directing experience is on the MTV series "The Hard Times of RJ Berger," a story of a high school student with a big genital. He will still be involved in the production but not Miller and Lord as they are occupied with "Han Solo," Deadline reported.
"The Flash" will be released on March 16, 2018 starring Ezra Miller who debuted in this year's "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice." Known as the fastest man alive, Flash is a hero who has gained super-speed capabilities.
When Grahame-Smith left, it was speculated Warner would wait until "Suicide Squad" is through before deciding how to proceed. There were rumors that the hero will team up with Cyborg, or with younger superheroes. That will not happen anymore with Famuyiwa on board though Cyborg (Ray Fisher) may still appear in "Flash."
