Fans who are waiting for the Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin super fight get a glimmer of hope. The two middleweight superstar can still collide later this year if negotiations materialize in the coming weeks.

Golden Boy Promotions senior vice president Eric Gomez revealed that they are now working on Canelo's next fight in September, BoxingScene reported. Canelo and his camp were recently involved in a legal battle with All-Star Boxing and the Mexican boxing superstar was ordered to pay his former promoter $8.5 million.

As for Canelo's next opponent, Gomez said they will still consider all options. "Everything is open right now. Obviously we were pre-occupied with this other stuff but now we're going to get to work, start planning a September fight and the rest of the schedule for the rest of the year," he said.

When asked about the possible showdown with Golovkin, Gomez revealed that he has already talked to K2 Promotions managing director Tom Loffler. He later added that discussions will continue in the coming days, reviving hopes for the highly anticipated bout.

Alvarez, who has a 47-1-1 record with 33 knockouts, was supposed to defend the World Boxing Council middleweight title to Golovkin, the mandatory challenger. Canelo was allowed to defend the title against Amir Khan in May, with the condition he will face Golovkin in September if he wins against the British boxing superstar.

Canelo pulled off a masterful sixth-round knockout win over Khan to keep the title. But instead of being forced to defend his belt against Golovkin, Canelo opted to relinquish the title. He reiterated, though, that he is still open to facing the undefeated middleweight champion in the future.

Golovkin was eventually named as the full-time WBC middleweight champion. The 34-year-old Kazakh is reportedly planning to fight again in August or September with or without Alvarez, ESPN reported. If the fight against Canelo will not happen this year, Golovkin could settle for a showdown with Chris Eubank Jr.

Golovkin, who holds a perfect 35-0 record with 32 knockouts, is coming off second-round stoppage win over Dominic Wade in April. The Karaganda, Kazakhstan native is also the reigning World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion.
