NVIDIA seems to be in a race to make more video card sales as they have furiously slashed the prices off the GTX 980 Ti, GTX 980 and the GTX 970 by a considerable margin.
AMD is slated to release their $200 Radeon RX 480 in two weeks and its price to performance ratio might have attracted more people to Team Red. NVIDIA is now cutting their prices for the GTX 900 series in an effort to garner more sales before the inevitable.
The GTX 1080 and the GTX 1070 have been the top choices for high-end 1440p and 4K gaming. However, their price range is still a bit too high for some consumers.
Since the GTX 1070 retails for $370 at its cheapest point, the previous gen cards are adjusting accordingly. The GTX 980 Ti gets the deepest price cut with $125 off, Videocardz has learned.
PC gamers will be glad to know that the GTX 980 will get a significant $75 price cut too, while the GTX 970 has the lowest at $25 off. Some PC builders think that the 970 price was not cut deep enough to make an impact considering that the $200 RX 480 will perform better while still being cheaper.
The price changes are already happening on major online shopping sites. Newegg now has the MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6G Golden Edition for only $369.99, HEXUS reported.
Second hand cards will even be cheaper now that the brand new GPUs have been price slashed. As an alternative, PC builders can use GTX 980 Ti for an SLI setup to match the GTX 1080 or even beat the GTX 1070.
One problem is that the 900 series Maxwell cards still consume more power than the new Pascal GPUs. It would also generate more heat which is something that gamers would like to consider when buying the cheaper GTX 980 and GTX 970 cards out in the market.
NVIDIA's strategy to cut prices for the GTX 980 Ti, GTX 980 and the GTX 970 cards could be a sound one considering that there haven't been any reviews yet of the $200 AMD Radeon RX 480. They could still milk out more money from gamers who are looking to upgrade their gaming rigs for 1440p or 4K gaming.
