Microsoft is boasting in a new video that their Edge browser leads to a longer battery life on laptops as it goes against Google Chrome, Opera and Mozilla Firefox.

It has been proven several times before that Chrome eats more battery power and other computer resources when it runs. The Microsoft Edge browser is being claimed to be better in terms of drawing less power which results to a longer battery life on laptops.

The Redmond-based tech company has put four identical Surface Book laptops running each of the different browsers on a loop. They wanted to show that their browser made the laptop run longer than the other three under the same circumstances.

Microsoft did prove its point as their Edge browser lasted the longest at seven hours and 22 minutes, Ars Technica has learned. Google Chrome only lasted four hours and 19 minutes, which was the shortest out of all the four Surface Book laptops. Mozilla Firefox lasted at five hours and the battery saving mode from Opera led to six hours and 18 minutes.

The test conducted cycled the laptops' browsers through several websites that people frequent the most. They include Amazon, Wikipedia, YouTube and Facebook.

Besides the test itself, Microsoft also revealed the real world power consumption metrics of the browsers. The Microsoft Edge only ate 465mW compared to Chrome's 720mW both on average, Geek reported.

One reason for the Edge's supremacy in power efficiency is because it draws in less power to conduct the same task as the other browsers. One task only pulled 2.1W in Edge while the task led to Firefox consuming 3.2W.

The lower the power consumption, the longer the battery will last. Laptop users often have problems with their battery life if they are not plugged in to a wall socket and the new metrics and test could help them decide what browser to choose if they want to get the most out of their battery juices.

Microsoft Edge has been one of the highlights when Windows 10 launched. It performed better than the sluggish Internet Explorer and now it has been proven to help laptops last longer compared to Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and even Opera while on their new battery-saving mode.
