Gennady Golovkin wants to defend his middleweight world titles in September but it will likely not be against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Recent boxing news indicated Golovkin could eventually face Chris Eubank Jr. in his next fight.

Fans are still aching for the showdown between Golovkin and Canelo based on recent data from Betway, BoxingScene reported. However, the super fight is unlikely to happen this year, especially after Alvarez opted to vacate the World Boxing Council middleweight title after defending it against Amir Khan in May.

Alvarez, who owns a 47-1-1 record with 33 knockouts, was supposed to have a mandatory title defense against Golovkin in September. But instead of being forced to defend the title against the Kazakh superstar, Alvarez decided to relinquish the title to have more options for his next fight.

With the Golovkin-Canelo fight is still in limbo, most fans believe that "Triple G" should settle for Eubank. Betway representative Alan Alger said the fight against Eubank will give Golovkin the best possible payday instead of facing reigning World Boxing Organization middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.

"A fight with Chris Eubank Jnr offers a far bigger payday for Gennady Golovkin than if he were to take on Billy Joe Saunders," Alger said. "Punters agree that money could be the deciding factor and have been happy to back Eubank being named Golovkin's next challenger."

Meanwhile, veteran promoter Eddie Hearn also revealed that Eubank is the top option for Golovkin's next fight. Hearn said that they have been making moves over the past several weeks to make the fight happen. And from the looks of it, the Matchroom Sport promoter believes the fight will take place in September, Sky Sports reported.

"We're in a position now where we haven't agreed terms but we're well on the way to agreeing terms with Golovkin for a September fight with Chris Eubank," Hearn said. The promoter added that Eubank and his camp have been aching for a shot at Golovkin for months.

But before getting a shot at Golovkin, Eubank must prove his worth in his next fight. The 26-year-old will defend his British middleweight title against Tom Doran on Saturday at O2 Arena (Millennium Dome) in Greenwich, London.
