Adam Boyes, vice president for third-party relations at PlayStation, announced on Thursday that he is leaving the company. PlayStation is Sony's gaming platforms brand.

In his announcement via his Twitter account, Boyes said that after his "incredible journey" with the company, he has decided to go back to game development.  Followers responded with messages congratulating him for his move and wishing him luck.

Boyes also made an appearance on an episode of the PlayStation Blogcast and talked about his departure. He said he had an amazing run and a great experience at Sony and that it was a tough decision for him to leave. However, he explained that returning to development was also a return to his roots.

Boyes started with game development before he joined Sony in 2012. He has worked with the now-defunct Midway, with Electronic Arts, and with Capcom. He has also founded his own production company called Beefy Media.

Boyes noted that this is his 21st year in the games business. He also pointed out that his four-year stint with Sony is the longest job he has ever had with one company. However, the executive said, his "big, dumb decision" to move forward is a way for him to follow his dreams and "throwing caution to the wind."

The VP also thanked PlayStation Nation fans and assured gamers and the development and publishing community that they are in great hands because the company has an incredible team.  However, in a response to a question about where he is particularly headed to next, Boyes clarified that he will be going back to making games "on the independent side."

PlayStation is a brand of video game consoles developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, which is a subsidiary of Sony Corp. The brand was introduced in December 1994 with the launch of its original PS console, and has evolved to now consist of four home consoles, a media center, a line of controllers, two handheld gaming consoles, a phone, an online service, and multiple magazines.

In his post as VP of publisher and developer relations, Boyes builds and maintains relationships with Sony Computer Entertainment America's (SCEA) external development and publishing partners who are based in North and South America. Aside from publisher and developer relations, he also leads partner alliance and portfolio strategy for all of the PlayStation platforms. He also oversees SCEA's third-party production team.
