Steve Martin, 69, was not chosen to be the "Saturday Night Live" 40th anniversary show host. However, he was given the honor to do the first monologue of the celebratory show and he did not do it alone.

Joining Martin were Miley Cyrus, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks, Chris Rock, Melissa McCarthy, Peyton Manning and Billy Crystal.

First, Martin was joined by Hanks followed by Baldwin. While Martin was talking about the long list of legendary comedians who have passed through "SNL" to host, who were vital to the show's success, Hanks pops in to remind him of all the great actors who hosted the show.

Baldwin then chimed in before McCarthy, Rock, Manning, Cyrus, who pointed out that she has appeared on the show both as the host and the musical guest, and Crystal.

McCartney and Simon then appeared and briefly performed a song.

After the group showcased who "SNL" has been around for 40 years, the skit then continued to a nostalgic montage that demonstrates the immense amount of talent from comedians, actors and musicians that has been on the show over the four decades.

Having started as a writer for the "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," Martin appeared on "SNL" from 1998 to 2012. He has just completed "Home," in which he voiced Captain Smek, which he also voiced in the 2014 film "Almost Home."

Aside from "SNL," Martin also appeared in TV series "30 Rock," "The Tracey Ullman Show," "The Ken Berry 'Wow' Show" and "The Sonny And Cher Comedy Hour."
