T-Mobile just announced that it is adding Samsung Galaxy smartphones to its T-Mobile Tuesday program that already includes Domino's pizzas, Wendy's Frosties, movie tickets, and free in-flight Wi-Fi. The "Un-carrier" will start offering some post-paid subscribers a free Samsung Galaxy On5 or Galaxy J7 starting on July 13, Wednesday. Members of T-Mobile's 6GB, 10GB,or Unlimited Simple Choice plan can claim their prize for a limited time while the third quarter back-to-school promotion lasts.
The options for the freebie phones are limited. Subscribers of T-Mobile's Simple Choice 6GB can get a Samsung Galaxy On5. Meanwhile, customers of the 10GB and Unlimited service can choose between the On5 and J7 models.
Samsung's mid-range budget phones were both released last year. The On5 includes a 5-inch HD (1,280p x 270p) display, Exynos 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. It also includes an 8MP rear-facing camera, 5MP front-facing shooter, and 2,600mAh battery.
Meanwhile, the J7 features a 5.5-inch AMOLED HD (1,280p x 720p) display, Snapdragon 615 processor, 1.5GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. It also includes a 13MP rear-facing phone camera, 5MP front-facing selfie camera, and 3,000mAh battery.
The regular retail price for the Galaxy On5 is $140, while the J7 has a $240 price tag.
T-Mobile customers have three options to claim their free Samsung phone. They can visit T-Mobile's website, go to a physical store, or call its customer service hotline, according to Digital Trends.
People who reserve a Galaxy handset must have an active line. They must also maintain service for two full years and pay applicable taxes, but besides that there are no extra charges.
T-Mobile shared that the promotion is a back-to-school offer. Its marketing chief Mike Sievert told USA Today it is being offered when families go on summer vacations and get ready for the new school year. He also referred to Verizon's recent price hike.
Last week Verizon offered its customers higher data caps but also increased its monthly rates by $5 to $10, according to USA Today. It also offered customers the chance to roll over unused data to the subsequent month. Verizon is the United States' largest wireless telecom.
