Since the announcement of NVIDIA's entry into the mainstream market with a GTX 1060, gamers have been waiting to see the graphics card's performance against AMD's legendary RX 480. At last, recent tests have now confirmed that the RX 480 falls behind its competitor.
The tests were carried out by popular benchmarking site Videocardz, which compared the RX 480 against the GTX 1060 and the last gen GTX 960. It used various game titles like "Ashes of Singularity," "Forza Motorsport 6: Apex Beta," "Fallout 4," "Grand Theft Auto V," "Star Wars: Battlefront," and "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" among others.
The tests included DX11, DX 12, and VR, on various settings including Max and Ultra-quality. On all of them, the GTX 1060 managed to outperform the RX 480 outstandingly. However, it was quite unclear if any of the cards was overclocked or not.
If they were not, NVIDIA may end up dominating the mainstream graphics cards market with the GTX 1060. For AMD, it will mean that the company might need another weapon to counter the new player in future.
According to WCCT Tech, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 is made with elements of efficiency and power performance coupled together to give unmatched superiority. NVIDIA claims that its chip has been crafted for speed and optimized for performance per watt.
It was manufactured under cutting-edge FinFET 16nm process, which allows the card to deliver a GTX 980-level performance along with twice the power efficiency of the latter. The inbuilt GPU in GTX 1060 also boasts of virtual reality (VR) support, stretching efficiency to accommodate both VR gaming and playback.
What is more, NVIDIA has succeeded in packing 1280 CUDA cores and 6GB of GDDR5 memory, running at 8Gbps, and a clock of 1.7GHz in the higher version of the card. The clock can get further overclocked to 2GHz for maximum performance.
For the base version, rumor claims that it will feature 1152 cores and 3GB of video RAM. Its retail price will be only $149, giving gamers, who have a tight budget, a chance to enjoy playing the latest games.
The higher version of GTX 1060 will unveil on July 19 at $249, while the release date of the lower version is yet to be confirmed.
