"Game of Thrones" showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have reignited rumors that the conclusion of the hit HBO series is likely to be followed by a spin-off set in the same universe. The rumor started when the duo admitted that "A Song of Ice and Fire" author George R.R. Martin has written the source material with ample opportunities to create, not just one, but various spin-offs.

"One of the great things about what George [R.R. Martin] did is he didn't just build a story... he built a world," UFC Unfilted Podcast quoted the duo as saying. "[There are] so many characters and such a rich detailed history behind it that there are a lot of different ways you could go with it."

The pair continued to elaborate how the popular author has given every character a complete back story. However, they were quick to point out that they have not seriously thought about "Game of Thrones" spin-offs yet since they are currently focused on making the upcoming season.

This is the first time that Benioff and Weiss appeared positive about the possibility of "Game of Thrones" spin-off. Earlier, they had dismissed the idea vehemently, even after HBO president Michael Lombardo's famous declaration that the network is open to the popular series' spin-off.

The recent statement by the showrunners triggered several fan theories about the anticipated spin-off. While a prequel to explore what actually went down with Mad King Aerys Targaryen is highly anticipated, a series focusing on Lyanna Mormont is also being speculated by some fans.

"Game of Thrones" actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, best known for his role as Jaime Lannister, has also hinted the possibility of spin-offs. The actor jokingly told New York Times during an interview that he will happily do such spin-offs for the rest of his career with his favorite idea being his character and Gwendoline Christie's Brienne of Tarth moving in together as roommates.
