In its nugget war versus Burger King, McDonald's is testing a new menu item. This week McDonalds started testing various seasoning flavors, in an attempt to get an edge over BK.

McDonald's started testing flavors that customers can shake onto their nuggets. Examples of the flavors include chipotle BBQ, zesty ranch, and garlic parmesan.

The Shakin' Flavor flavoring will also be available in other cities. They include San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, and Chico, according to CNBC.

The new flavored nuggets seem to be a response to Burger King's nugget challenge. It is now promoting 10 nuggets for $1.49.

Burger King's parent company is Restaurant Brands International. Last year the fast food chain's sales rose 3 percent last quarter.

The golden arches has recently tried out flavor pockets for its French fries. These pockets are already popular in Asia.

In fact, Shake Shake Fries were launched in Hong Kong in 2005, according to Huffington Post. Customers put fries in a bag and then shook the bag to blend in the flavoring.

The fast food giant has recently taken steps to make its menu shorter and simpler. This has been due to slowing sales in the United States.

The new nuggets will double McDonalds' chance to promote products. One of McDonald's goals has been to give its co-ops and regions more authority in selecting new products to offer.

Besides its new nugget flavoring, McDonalds will also bring back its Chicken Selects early in March. The recommended price for the 3-piece order will be $2.99.
