The Pokemon Company and Legendary Pictures are coming together for a live-action Pokemon movie, "Detective Pikachu". The production of the movie is slated to begin in 2017, confirmed Legendary Entertainment.

Following the gargantuan international success of the Pokemon Go in recent weeks, the idea is to focus on Detective Pikachu, an animated character from the game. The video game was introduced earlier this year in Japan.

Going by Detective Pikachu's storyline, it is focused upon the iconic golden-colored electric mouse making friendship with a boy whose name is Tim. Both Pikachu and the boy embark on a mission to find the boy's missing father.

It is, however, unclear whether the movie will have a similar or identical narrative. As of now, the movie does not have any specified release date or any big names associated with it. The only information that has been leaked is that the movie once produced will be distributed by Universal outside the boundaries of Japan.

There are further reports that the live-action film, "Detective Pikachu", could be turned into a feature franchise in the future, Deadline reported. In the earlier films, there have been animated spin-off of Pokemon from the original television series, wherein the protagonists Pikachu and Ash often get involved into tiffs with ancient creatures, recognized as the legendary Pokemon.

Compared to its animated counterpart, the real version of Pikachu is more mature in the movie since he is seen drinking coffee and flirting with girls, The Verge reported. For a while, rumors have been running wild for a possible Pokemon movie. Meanwhile screenwriter Max Landis is a probable participant.

There has been no confirmation by Legendary or Pokemon Company whether the movie deal is finalized. Thomas Tull's company, Legendary, has numerous high-profile movies lined up as for now. Legendary was purchased by Wanda and is now currently directed by Mary Parent.

It should be noted that Legendary recently won the auction for the movie Bad Blood and also acquired an untitled project for Nate Parker, the writer-producer-director of The Birth of a Nation.

Since the year 1996, Pokemon Go has been around and it has always remained highly popular with the kids. However, the recent launch of the Pokemon Go app swept the market with its popularity. The specialty of this app is that it allows players to collect pocket monsters that are littered everywhere, found while walking or driving.
