Reliable mobile industry info leaker Evan Blass has revealed the iPhone 7 release date to be on September 12, 2016 and has also unveiled that the two codenames of the new iPhones.

Blass, who is known as @evleaks on Twitter, said that the two new iPhone 2016 models have a codename of Dos Palos and Sonora which are both places that can be found in California, the home court of Apple. Other than that, there were no further details regarding the iPhone 7.

There has been some accurate leaked info from Blass over the past few years but it was mostly for Android smartphones. His track record for Apple iPhones can still be doubted but the date he revealed is not really far off if Apple would stick to their release schedule same as last year.

Blass's iPhone 7 2016 release date is on September 12 whereas the iPhone 6S was announced last year on September 9 which makes it more likely to be true, Mashable has learned. Apple could announce their new iPhones Dos Palos and Sonora and ship them by the end of the month just like what they did with the iPhone 6 variants.

Critics have speculated that the iPhone 7 may be one of Apple's most boring iPhones ever as there won't be a lot of innovation. In fact, some people are waiting for the iPhone 8 instead as it has been rumored to be featuring an OLED panel which will make it a first in Apple's iPhone products.

Apple could be releasing the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus which could be the two variants that Blass is referring to, 9 to 5 Mac reported. There is also a rumored iPhone 7 Pro variant that will have the Smart Connector but there have been no heavy evidence regarding the said iPhone model.

The iPhone 7 Sonora and Dos Palos are expected to have a dual-camera setup and revamped antenna lines. Apple is also reportedly ditching the 16GB model and starting with 32GB so that they can push the higher-end variant up to 256GB of internal memory.

Press invites for the iPhone 7 could be expected by August if Blass's release date reveal is indeed true.  There is still a high possibility that it will be revealed in September if the Cupertino-based company is far behind their schedule.
