Prisma Labs struck it big with Prisma for iOS users. Now it braces for more user downloads with its debut for Android users.

It was only a matter of time before Prisma Labs came up with an Android version of its hit app “Prisma”. With its official launch, the Russian team behind the hyped app hopes to see similar numbers that the iOS version was able to achieve.

For those who are unaware, Prisma scored it big with iOS users after turning in more than 10 million downloads globally. Somehow Prisma managed to become a hit alongside the game craze Pokemon Go, a remarkable achievement considering the App Store had its fair share of photo-sharing apps to choose from.

With that development, Prisma Labs hopes to see the numbers swell all the more for Android users. The company did send out a beta version recently something reportedly intended to collect feedback and buy time for servers before launch, VentureBeat reported.

Apparently all that was ironed out sometime last week after Prisma for Android was launched over the weekend. It is now available from the Google Play Store.

As mentioned earlier, it seems uncanny to find Prisma gaining attention. The iOS version scored big when it launched last June 11, emerging as the top app for countries like Russia, Estonia, Kazakhistan, Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

A possible reason for its success is the filters that the Prisma app has to offer. It transforms standard photos into ultra-realistic pieces, tapping the likes of Picasso, Van Gogh and Munch.

The Prism app is quite easy to use. All users have to do is launch the app, select a photo and then choose the filter that captures their fancy. The app follows a similar type of neutral network that Shutterstock developed, analyzing each photo and then applying the style to perk up the image.

But the thing that perhaps made it a big hit lies in the way the app functions. CEO Alexey Moiseenkov explains how Prisma preserves the original photo and apply the art render separately. This way, the original photo remains unscathed.

Other than that, there is the business angle which may have contributed to its success. The company received an undisclosed investment from Mail.ru via its Silicon Valley-based subsidiary My.com. Gagarin Capital is another backer as well as Servers.com, according to Mail.ru.

Right now, it may only be a matter of time before the Android users download numbers skyrocket as it did on iOS-backed devices.
