AMD has just revealed their new prototype Radeon Pro SSG that will be able to use up to 1TB of SSD storage for its memory along with their new line of Radeon Pro WX cards.
NVIDIA has recently unveiled their Quadro P6000 and Quadro P5000 which is powered by their Pascal GPU architecture. Now, the AMD Radeon Pro WX cards have been announced as well to take on Team Green's workstation cards as well.
The company revealed the new Radeon Pro WX cards W4100, W5100 and the W7100 which are designed for those building high-end PC workstations. AMD's new Radeon Pro SSG can use up to 1TB of SSD storage via the PEX8747 bridge chip, ExtremeTech has learned.
One problem that AMD had to solve was the GPU memory limit as even the most high-end rigs today can only use up to 32GB. The company moved the workloads of the GPU into the on-card NAND flash which then solves the high latency problem that the PCI Express bus has making it viable for more powerful and heavier workloads overall.
AMD has also unveiled their new Radeon Pro WX7100 which is powered by the new Polaris 10 GPU architecture that also drives the new RX 480, RX 470 and RX 460 line of consumer graphics cards. The Radeon pro WX7100 has 2304 stream processors and 128 texture units, Anandtech reported.
Unlike the Radeon Pro SSG, the WX7100 only has 8GB GDDR5 for its memory which is then powered by the 256-bit bus. There are no confirmations yet for the other specs but it is expected that it will have at least 150W for the TDP considering its raw power for a workstation.
Meanwhile, the Radeon Pro SSG will have to be thoroughly tested first. Developers would even need to code support for their apps to use the 1TB memory on the new card. The card has been shown to be able to scrub through 8K video at an impressive speed of 4GB/s.
AMD has not yet announced the release dates for the new Radeon Pro WX series cards but they are expected to be released in the fourth quarter of 2016. The Pro SSG card could be launched significantly later as it is still a prototype at this stage.
