MTV has just announced the nominees for this year's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), but has left out Taylor Swift. The singer, who is a six-time VMA winner, received no nominations despite releasing three music videos in the past year.
According to US Weekly, this is a surprising turn of events considering that Swift led the pack of nominees at last year's VMA, with a total of 10 nominations for her album "Bad Blood." The report noted that it is possible Swift is no longer eligible this year as she took home four awards last year, including the most coveted video of the year, plus her latest album was released late 2014.
Swift came out with three music videos in the past year from her latest album, "1989." These are "New Romantics," "Out of the Woods," and "Wildest Dreams." "Wildest Dreams" even premiered during last year's VMA preshow. Meanwhile, "Out of the Woods" had landed a high-profile debut on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve in December 2015.
The magazine revealed that Beyoncé and Adele are the top nominees for the 2016 VMAs. Beyoncé landed 11 nominations for her "Lemonade" visual album, which is the most number of nominations she got in her career, while Adele is right behind her, with eight nominations for "Hello" and "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)."
According to Fox News, Beyoncé and Adele will compete for best female video of the year, along with Sia, Rihanna, and Ariana Grande. They will also compete with Kanye West's controversial "Famous" for video of the year, and with Justin Bieber (Sorry) and Drake (Hotline Bling) for the top prize.
The news agency also pointed out that while Swift failed to land a single nomination, her former boyfriend, Calvin Harris, got two nods. One of these nominations is for "This is What You Came For," which Harris co-wrote with Swift.
Other artists who earned multiple nominations this year include Coldplay, Fergie, Desiigner, and Alessia Cara.
The 2016 MTV VMAs will be airing live from the Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday, August 28, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can begin voting online on Tuesday next week.
