The San Antonio Spurs could be attempting to lure Stephen Curry away from the Golden State Warriors once the reigning league MVP hits the free agency market next summer.
The Spurs have been rumored to have interests in pursuing Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry in the summer of 2017, when the sharp-shooter becomes a free agent.
Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report told Sirius XM Radio that he believes the Spurs would use the idea of Kevin Durant taking the super-stardom away from Curry, and luring the latter to become the star once again by joining the likes of Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge.
"I think the Spurs are looking at the fact that Kevin Durant came in Golden State and that Durant may take up some of the superstar space that was previously occupied by Steph Curry," Bucher said. "And when Steph Curry becomes a free agent, I think they're gonna go hard on Curry [in free agency]."
Bucher noted that Curry coming to the Spurs would create a perfect combination playing alongside Leonard and Aldridge. However, Bucher also claimed it is only a possibility if the Warriors fail to win a championship this season.
Last month, Bucher also claimed that a mysterious team plans to poach Curry away from the Bay Area. He was quoted saying on a video posted on Bleacher Report's official Facebook page that the team's pitch to Curry would be "Come to us and you can be the man once more."
The idea of Curry joining the Spurs could be equal to the same hype Durant created when he decided to take his talents in Golden State. Curry would not only be a key cog in continuing a dynasty, but would also seamlessly fit in the Spurs' brand of basketball.
Curry is entering the final year of his four-year $44 million contract with the Warriors, making him an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2017. Considering Curry's big role in helping the Warriors transform into legit title contenders, many believe the two-time NBA MVP would remain playing for Golden State.
Curry has also admitted during the team's face-to-face meeting with Durant last month that he is more than willing to step away from the limelight if it means winning another title for the Warriors.
"According to a person who saw the text messages, Curry told Durant in a text message that he could care less about who is the face of the franchise, who gets the most recognition or who sells the most shoes (Curry is with Under Armor, Durant with Nike)," Spears wrote.
"The two-time NBA MVP also told Durant that if Durant won the MVP award again he would be in the front row of the press conference clapping for him. In closing, Curry's message to Durant was that all he truly cared about was winning championships and he'd like to do that as his teammate."
There is so much to speculate at this point, with NBA fans yet to see how Durant would affect Curry and the Warriors next season. But if their much-anticipated experiment fails this season, expect the Spurs lurking to woo Curry in joining San Antonio.
